The side effects of vaccination are not as risky compared to the disease they are preventing. While most medicines are having side effects vaccines just like the medicines you are taking have their side effects as well.

Vaccines’ side effects are usually minor and subside after a few days. Side effects such as fever, allergic reactions, loss of appetite and soreness can be treated immediately and doctors do advise parents of the side effects and prescribe necessary medications in case side effects are manifested after the administration.

DTaP, MMR and Polio are the three most common vaccines that are administered to infants and toddlers. Discussed below are their side effects which will be helpful to parents like you.

DTap (Diptheria, Tetanus and Acellural Pertussis)

DTap (Diptheria, Tetanus and Acellural Pertussis) vaccine does not cause serious harm. Most children vaccinated with DTaP may manifest some mild problems like fever, swelling and redness where the shot was administered as well as soreness and tenderness. These side effects are very common with DTaP vaccines.

Usually these problems occur after the 4th and 5th shots compared to the earlier doses given. Other mild problems will include fussiness, tiredness and poor appetite and also vomiting. These common problems basically occur within 1 – 3 days after the shot is given.

MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella)

Most children who are injected with MMR vaccine do not suffer from any side effects from the vaccine. However, mild problems like fever, mild rash and swelling of the glands on the cheek and neck (rarely happens) are observed between 7 – 12 days after the shot is given. These side effects occur less often on the following dose.

Moderate side effects will include seizure caused by fever, temporary pain and stiffness on the joints occurs with teenagers and adult women. Temporary low platelet count happens as well that can cause bleeding disorders.

Severe side effects of MMR like serious allergic reactions are less than one in a million doses. Other severe problems like deafness, long term seizures and coma are known to occur with MMR vaccine but this rarely happens and it has not been explained if these effects were cause by the vaccine or not.

Polio Vaccine

Polio vaccine does not usually have any serious side effects aside from allergic reaction. Most individuals who are injected with Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) feel sore on the spot where the vaccine is given. This vaccine that is being used today has never shown any know serious problems and most individuals do not have any problems with the vaccine at all.

Some parents are hesitant in having their children vaccinated but comparing the side effects to the risk caused by the diseases being prevented by the following vaccines are much higher. Parent should remember that vaccines are just like any medicines and may have side effects as well. Preventing health risks is much better than exposing your child to a much higher risk that may lead to his death.
